kapok tamod enkanto (2020)

DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT (Mac Andre Arboleda)

The film "Kapok Tamod Engkanto" is a site-specific film that tries to unravel the myth of the so-called Sperm Bridge in the University of the Philippines Los Baños. Originally called Palma Bridge, the area exudes a foul odor in the months of August and September, which is supposedly caused by a tree called the Duklitan. However, much like the folklore surrounding Los Baños and Mount Makiling, rumors go around that this was because of fraternities masturbating in the rivers, engkantos, and even couples having sex nearby.

The story follows Leo, a boy (often misgendered by strangers) who struggles versus the bureaucracies of his school. After failing many of his subjects, he is determined to continue his studies and find a way to get his papers approved. This is a personal film that employs the use of fantasy and humor to criticize/question our educational system, which leaves those "less deserving" behind.
